CAFNEC is currently supporting the ‘Renewable Energy NOW! for FNQ’ campaign. The primary goal of this campaign is a rapid transition to renewable energy, with a long term goal of 100% for our region.

Given our abundant natural energy sources, a rapid transition to renewable energy is a realistic and attainable goal when coupled with improved energy efficiency. FNQ has enormous potential for renewable energy generation, particularly wind, solar and bagasse. There are also strong incentives for reducing our dependence on electricity from southern Queensland including: greater security of supply; reduced transmission losses; job creation and growth of the local economy.

Campaign goals:

• An urgent transition to renewable energy for our region with a long term goal of 100% renewable
• Large-scale energy efficiency for all sectors combined with the phasing out of fossil fuels and replacement by renewable energy technology
• A fair transition for affected workers accompanied by the creation of thousands of jobs in the new clean energy sector

Our region has the potential to become a leader in renewable energy generation. At the same time we can protect our tourism industry, boost the local economy, generate ‘green’ jobs, and showcase the progress of our region towards ecological sustainability.

We’re joining hundreds of other groups and organisations across the country to call for an immediate transition to renewable energy, and we are inviting local organisations and businesses to be part of this exciting campaign. Strong community and industry support will demonstrate the growing demand for an urgent transition to renewable energy. Your involvement can help to create a positive and environmentally sound future for our region and for Australia.
