THE END OF THE LINE OR A NEW BEGINNING FOR FISHING

Cairns: Friday November 6 2009

This evening CAFNEC highlights the desperate plight of our global oceans by showing the groundbreaking documentary, the End of the Line tonight at the Cairns Civic Theatre. The future of fishing and our oceans is a topic we all must consider when buying our seafood.

"This film is a must see for anyone with an interest in the ocean, fish, seafood, diving or how the world will feed itself. With 90% of the world's large fish seemingly disappearing in the last fifty years, the recent collapse of some of the world's largest fisheries, the time has come to take an urgent look at the health of our oceans and their ability to sustain themselves and the billions that rely on them into the future.

Fishing has changed and so must our outlook. This film claims we can no longer view the ocean as we have for centuries, an inexhaustible food source. With nets capable of holding thirteen 747 aircraft and every year enough longline is set to encircle the planet 550 times we cannot ignore the implications, Said Steve Ryan, CAFNEC Marine Campaigner.

If the collapse of the Southern Bluefin tuna stocks are not enough of a wake call enough, this film outlines why we need to take decisive action across the world's oceans if we are to avoid the collapse of yet more fisheries.

Everyone can help our oceans buy making sure they know where their seafood has come from. Buying local is a good start and avoiding bigger predators such as Sharks, Tuna, Swordfish. Imported wild-caught, farmed fish and prawns may be much cheaper, but the real cost to the oceans and local economy really are cause to rethink what you buy.

Ocean scientists in the film claim there is a need for 20-30% of the world's oceans to be fully protected from fishing. This will "turn back the clock" for our oceans and help provide a future for fish, fishing and our ocean environments. New oceanic marine reserves, such the proposed Coral Sea Heritage Park, are certainly an important part of the answer.
